Project

A design for a new museum in the FORUM building in Rotterdam (the Netherlands). The FORUM building is a project done by OMA at the Coolsingel in the city centre and the shopping district. The building has an existing part (an old monumental bank building) and a new part and has a shopping mall, hotel, cinema, dwellings and an underground parking. The goal of the studio was to make a future scenario for the building and to make an intervention in the design.

After investigating the design I came up with four ‘problems’ which formed my scenario:
1. The food court at the second level is not working. The main problem of the food court is the location, a strange and dark space between the old building and the new building. Also the blind facades and the lacking relationship with the environment was an argument that I choose this space as the starting place for my intervention.
2. The cinema on level 3 is too big. Very close to the new cinema is one very large and famous cinema owned by the same owner.
3. The void in the building has no function and destination. There are two big voids in the design with afford daylight coming in the middle part. The impact on the construction to create this voids is very large and the voids are very spectacular spaces, so a good destination is desirable.
4. A cultural spot is missing in the building and the direct environment.

The new FORUM museum connects the old bank building with the new building. The museum is a diagonal line along in the building and connects different spaces on different levels with each other. The main level of the museum is at the former food court, now a large, multifunctional hall. It can be closed off and a part of the museum or an open event hall. In the museum the furniture is intergraded in way finding elements which also provide the spaces for the art. Following this elements in the main hall, the visitor enters a part of the old bank building, a space with the permanent exposition. It is an exposition about the history of the city of Rotterdam. When time pass by and the exposition is changing from the old steel harbour towards modern city (the only high-rise city in the Netherlands) the visitor walks from the old bank building to the modern FORUM building where the exposition route ends up in one of the voids of the building, a window to the city, where the visitor can see how the history became reality.
